On July 8, 2025, Fairmont police released bodycam footage showing the May 17 DUI arrest of former Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton.

The video, captured during a late-night traffic stop in Fairmont, West Virginia, shows Retton slurring her speech, appearing unsteady, and struggling through multiple field sobriety tests. She is also seen using supplemental oxygen at the scene.

In the footage, officers approach Retton’s white Porsche after reports of erratic driving. A screw-top wine bottle is found inside the vehicle. Retton declines a blood alcohol test and exhibits signs of physical and emotional distress.

During transport to the station, she refers to herself as “West Virginia’s first daughter,” a line that drew public attention after the video’s release.

The video shows Retton attempting to follow officer instructions, removing her oxygen mask to complete breath exercises, and at one point saying, “I’m so embarrassed.”

She is ultimately arrested and later charged with non-aggravated DUI, a misdemeanor for first-time offenders in the state. She pled no contest, paid a $100 fine, and was released on $1,500 bond.

Retton later issued an apology through her attorney, taking full responsibility for her actions.

The footage has circulated widely online and drawn renewed attention to the incident due to Retton’s public profile and past health struggles.
