Season 8, Episode 7 of Rick and Morty, titled “Ricker Than Fiction,” premiered on July 6, 2025, featuring voice cameos from filmmakers James Gunn and Zack Snyder.
Both appeared as animated, fictionalized versions of themselves in scenes that referenced their involvement in superhero films.
In the episode, Gunn voices a passionate filmmaker presenting his version of Superman. Snyder appears separately in a Warner Bros. cafeteria, offering the line, “He’s the Man of Steel, not the Man of Conversation.”

The plot follows Rick’s use of a device called the “Movie-lizer,” which allows him to rewrite movie scripts. Gunn’s character receives praise for his work before being humorously eliminated using an exaggerated fictional weapon.
Snyder later comments on Rick’s intelligence and creativity.
According to the production team, both directors recorded their parts in the same session. Executive producer Scott Marder stated that the pair were enthusiastic participants and engaged fully with the material.
The episode continues Rick and Morty’s long-running tradition of pop culture references and celebrity guest appearances.
Gunn and Snyder join a list of previous guest stars who have contributed to the show’s satirical take on media, entertainment, and science fiction.
