KARACHI:

An investigation is underway into the escape of over 200 prisoners from Malir Jail, with a committee formed to probe the incident. So far, 179 fugitives have been recaptured, including some who surrendered voluntarily. However, 44 are still at large. One escaped prisoner took his own life, while another died under mysterious circumstances.

It may be recalled that the jailbreak occurred during an earthquake on June 2, 2025, when around 600 prisoners were taken out of their barracks for their safety. Out of them 225 managed to flee amid the chaos. The Malir Jail houses approximately 6,000 inmates, many of whom are involved in drug-related cases.

The investigation committee has recorded statements of several officials, including former superintendent Arshad Shah, and multiple prisoners. The authorities are making efforts to track down the remaining fugitives, with targeted raids being conducted at their residences and surrounding areas.

The authorities also visited the barracks from where the prisoners escaped.
