Caitlin Clark held to season-worst performance, but Fever still outclass Storm

Caitlin Clark endured her most challenging performance of the WNBA season on Tuesday, but the Indiana Fever still outlasted the Seattle Storm 94–86, thanks to standout displays from Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston.

Clark, who was closely marked throughout by Seattle forward Gabby Williams, was held to just six points — her lowest scoring output of the season — on 3-of-13 shooting.

The rookie guard missed all six of her three-point attempts and committed eight turnovers. Despite her shooting struggles, she contributed with nine assists.

However, it was Mitchell and Boston who carried Indiana’s offence. Mitchell tallied 26 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including five three-pointers, while Boston recorded a career-high 31 points and eight rebounds.

The Fever shot 50.7 percent from the field and improved to 7–7, snapping a two-game losing streak.

“They came out hard. We did not,” said Seattle’s Nneka Ogwumike. “When that happens, you’re going to be playing from behind the entire time.”

The loss snapped Seattle’s three-game win streak and dropped them to 9–6. The Storm had entered the game as the WNBA’s top three-point shooting team but struggled from beyond the arc, converting just 8-of-28 attempts (28.6 percent).

Seattle also struggled in key areas, losing the rebounding battle 38–18 and committing 17 turnovers, which led to 18 Indiana points.

“They out-teamed us tonight,” said guard Skylar Diggins, who led the Storm with 22 points and six assists. “They were quicker to 50/50 balls, more physical, and just better in every category. It’s unacceptable.”

The match drew a sellout crowd of 18,343 to Climate Pledge Arena — the venue’s largest this season — with a strong contingent of fans wearing Clark’s No. 22 jersey.

Despite the defensive success against Clark, Indiana led 45–39 at halftime and widened the margin with a 30–19 third quarter.

The Storm mounted a late push in the fourth, outscoring the Fever 28–19, but ultimately fell short. Erica Wheeler scored 20 points, including 14 in the final period, while Ogwumike added 16 and Williams had 11.

Fever head coach Christie Sides credited her team’s composure and balanced scoring effort. “We executed well under pressure, especially in the third quarter. That gave us the cushion we needed.”

Seattle head coach Noelle Quinn praised her team’s defensive approach to Clark but acknowledged the decisive impact of Mitchell and Boston. “We did a great job containing Caitlin, but it was those two matchups that proved decisive.”

Fans on social media, however, were not fully satisfied with Clark's performance.
