Mayor Murtaza Wahab has sought city council's support to eradicate illegal hydrants from across the city.
Chairing the reconvened meeting of the council he discussed the city's critical water supply and drainage issues and to find the comprehensive solutions.
The mayor proposed forming a cross-party committee to guide the Water Corporation. He acknowledged Karachi's persistent water shortages and stressed the need for a fair, collective policy, and suggested that parliamentary and opposition leaders form a committee to resolve water issues.
He announced that the Hub Dam canal would be completed by August 14, expressing hope for significant improvement in Karachi's water situation. The mayor called for joint efforts to solve the city's water and sewerage problems.
He mentioned that Karachi requires 1,200 million gallons of water daily but receives only 500 million gallons.
He also mentioned that despite operations at 200 sites, illegal hydrants re-emerge due to external pressure. The mayor announced a renewed crackdown on water theft, asking UCs to assist in identifying culprits. Mayor Wahab emphasised humility and unity by sitting as a Union Council Chairman during the council meeting. For the first time, public servants were made accountable in the council, and the mayor stressed the responsibility of solving public problems with the cooperation of officers.
