Ryan McMahon clutch as Colorado Rockies stun New York Yankees

The Rockies, who entered the game with the the worst record in the league, received a timely boost from left-hander Ryan McMahon.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, McMahon crushed a two-run double off Yankees lefty Tim Hill, sending the ball soaring deep to center field and igniting the home crowd of 47,211.

“It was great getting a full house here. It’s so much fun, especially on a beautiful summer night like this,” McMahon said, also recalling a slick defensive play in the ninth inning that helped close out the game.

Rockies starter Tanner Gordon pitched solidly, supported by three relievers who held the Yankees scoreless after Judge’s homer. Gordon earned his first major-league win after delivering a 1-2-3 sixth inning and watching the bullpen preserve the lead.

Bo Nix, quarterback of the Denver Broncos, helped kick off the night by throwing a perfect ceremonial first pitch, energizing local fans as 9NEWS broadcast the Rockies’ first Friday night game of the season live. The station will air nine more home games this year.

Despite Judge’s dominance—he leads the American League in batting average and homers—the Rockies showed signs of resilience.

Young hitters Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman extended the fifth-inning rally with back-to-back singles, setting the stage for McMahon’s game-changing hit.

Yankee starter Clarke Schmidt struggled to contain the Rockies’ bats and was pulled before completing the fifth inning after throwing 97 pitches.

The Rockies improved to 9-42 with the win, a bright spot in an otherwise difficult season, while the Yankees dropped to 30-20.

“It’s a night I won’t forget,” Gordon said. “I’ll tell my kids about this one.”
