No warning, just gone: Sony wipes Russian-linked PlayStation accounts

Sony suspends thousands of Russian PSN accounts in a crackdown on users bypassing regional service restrictions.

Sony has launched a sweeping crackdown on PlayStation accounts linked to Russian users, suspending thousands of profiles amid efforts to enforce regional restrictions. Since officially exiting the Russian market in 2022 following geopolitical tensions, Sony has barred access to PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) and other digital services in Russia.

Despite the ban, many Russian gamers continued accessing PS Plus by using foreign addresses, payment methods, and VPNs. In response, Sony has recently stepped up enforcement, using IP address tracking to identify accounts accessing the service from Russian territory.

This intensified action has led to widespread suspensions, affecting both new and long-standing accounts with valuable games and subscriptions. Many Russian players report losing access without warning or explanation, with some having invested substantial amounts in their libraries.

Sony’s move is seen as a measure to comply with international sanctions and uphold its regional service restrictions, signaling a firm stance amid ongoing geopolitical challenges affecting the Russian gaming community.
