Maya Hawke has joined the cast of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the latest film in Lionsgate’s blockbuster franchise based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novels. The Stranger Things star will play Wiress, a former Hunger Games victor who now serves as a mentor for District 12.
Hawke joins a cast that includes Joseph Zada as a young Haymitch Abernathy and Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird. Additional cast members include Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee.
The film adapts Collins’ newest addition to the Hunger Games universe, published on March 18, 2025. Set 24 years before the original trilogy, the story begins on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games — also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The narrative follows 16-year-old Haymitch, a cunning and inventive teen from District 12, who finds himself selected for a game that doubles the stakes: 48 tributes will enter the arena instead of the usual 24.
Francis Lawrence, who directed several previous instalments in the franchise, returns to helm the project from a script by Billy Ray. Producers include Color Force’s Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, with Cameron MacConomy serving as executive producer. The project is overseen at Lionsgate by Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien, with deal negotiations led by Robert Melnik.
Hawke, widely known for her role as Robin in Netflix’s Stranger Things, has recently lent her voice to Inside Out 2 and appeared in films such as Maestro, Wildcat, and Asteroid City. She is represented by CAA, Untitled Entertainment, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to release on November 20, 2026.
