At least 21 people have died and 14 others were injured after a passenger bus skidded off a cliff in Sri Lanka’s central hill country early Sunday, officials said.

The accident occurred near the town of Kotmale, about 140km east of the capital Colombo, in a mountainous region known for its narrow roads and steep terrain.

Authorities said nearly 50 people were on board the state-run bus when it veered off the road. The injured, including the driver, are being treated in local hospitals.

Transport officials blamed poor road conditions and potential driver error, while rescue efforts continued through the morning.
