LAHORE:

Increase in cotton production is essential for enhancing the volume of national exports and a sowing target of 3.5 million acres has been set for Punjab, of which more than 2.2 million acres have already been planted with the crop.

It was stated by Punjab Agricultural Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo while chairing a review meeting on cotton cultivation at Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture, Multan.

He stated that the final phase of cotton cultivation would continue till May 25. Additionally, a special incentive package is being provided to transform the Bahawalpur Division into a true "cotton valley".

The selection process for model farms for cotton sowing is ongoing and adequate canal water supply is being ensured in the crop growing areas. Moreover, guidance for proper care of early-sown cotton is being provided. In this regard, specific tasks have been given to field formations for the assistance of growers.

Cotton plays a crucial role in Pakistan's agricultural landscape and contributes significantly to both the national economy and rural livelihoods. As one of the country's primary cash crops, cotton not only supports the textile industry – Pakistan's largest exporter – but also provides employment to millions in rural areas.

Despite challenges such as inconsistent rainfall, pest infestations and water scarcity, the government is focused on revitalising cotton farming. Efforts to increase the area under cotton crop have yielded positive results, with targeted initiatives to improve productivity and quality.

Special Agricultural Secretary for South Punjab Sarfraz Hussain Magasi and National Seed Authority Chairman Dr Asif Ali were present in the meeting.
