JOS, NIGERIA:

Gunmen killed six people in an attack on a village in a central Nigerian region that has seen a rise in religious tensions, authorities said Tuesday. Several people were also wounded in the attack in Marit in the Barkin district of Plateau state, a spokesperson for the local government said.

"We were sleeping in the night, we heard gunshots. We don't know what we did to these people. They don't want to leave us in peace," said one villager, David Davou. Davou added that he and his family hid in the bush and saw dead bodies the next morning.

Authorities did not say who carried out the attack, but Plateau state is caught between Nigeria's mainly Muslim north and its Christian south and has seen frequent inter-communal attacks. More than 100 people were killed in two weeks of unrest in April in the state. Nearly 200 people were killed in one massacre in a Christian village in December 2023. AFP
