Five more victims injured in last week’s oil tanker explosion in Noshki, Balochistan, have died during treatment at Karachi hospitals, bringing the total death toll to eight, rescue officials confirmed on Saturday.
According to Edhi Foundation, the blast on April 28 injured at least 38 people, most of whom sustained severe burns, Express News reported.
Of those, 24 critically wounded patients were airlifted to Karachi on April 29 via Edhi Air Ambulance for specialised treatment.
One of the victims, 38-year-old Mahmood Ahmed, died mid-flight. Two others—Tayyab Shah and Jehanzaib—succumbed to their injuries earlier this week while under care at a private hospital in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal area.
On Friday night and early Saturday morning, five additional victims—identified as Salman (18), Wazir Ahmed (17), Dur Mohammad (26), Abdul Basit (25), and Mustafa (28)—passed away during treatment at two different private hospitals in the city.
All five bodies have been transferred to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth.
Seventeen other patients remain under treatment in private hospitals across Karachi, according to Edhi officials.
The explosion occurred near a truck terminal in Nushki when an oil tanker caught fire and exploded, injuring more than 40 people. Many had gathered around the vehicle before the blast.
Local authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the fire, which reportedly originated inside the tanker before triggering the explosion.
Emergency protocols were enacted at area hospitals following the incident, and special aircraft were dispatched to transport the most critically injured to Karachi for care.
