Dwayne Johnson has revealed a striking transformation for his role as UFC legend Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, a biographical film directed and written by Benny Safdie.
The film, set to release on October 3, 2025, is based on Kerr's life, focusing on his success in the UFC and his struggles with substance abuse. The movie also stars Emily Blunt, who reunites with Johnson after Jungle Cruise.
A24 unveiled the film’s first poster on April 28, featuring Johnson as Kerr with short black hair, marking the beginning of an exciting promotional campaign. Along with the poster, the studio confirmed that the trailer will be released on April 29, generating anticipation among fans.
In a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Johnson explained why he was drawn to the challenging role. He expressed a desire for something different from his usual blockbuster roles, seeking a part that would push him as an actor. “I wanted to chase the challenge and be inspired by it,” he said, noting how the role made him nervous in a way that reminded him of the early days of his career.
Johnson’s dedication to the role has been praised by fellow MMA fighter Ryan Bader, who commended his physical transformation for the role. The Smashing Machine marks a departure from Johnson’s typical action films, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
The film’s release follows a 2002 documentary on Kerr’s life, which delves into his rise to fame, struggles with addiction, and the impact it had on his personal life.
