Authorities in Chicago are investigating after more than $300,000 in cash fell from the back of a Brinks Home Security truck in on 22 April , in the Oak Park neighbourhood, with dozens of people seizing the money before fleeing.
The back door of the Brinks vehicle became ajar by "unknown means," causing three cash-filled bags to drop onto Austin Boulevard. Witnesses reported a chaotic scene as between 50 and 100 individuals quickly collected the loose cash and left the area.
Brinks officials confirmed the amount missing is estimated at over $300,000. The company stated that the back door malfunction is under review, but provided no further details about how the bags became unsecured.
Despite the significant loss, the Village of Oak Park reported that no arrests have been made so far. Local police are continuing their investigation and are appealing to anyone who collected the money to return it voluntarily.
Similar cases in the past have seen individuals charged with theft for keeping found cash, though authorities have not yet confirmed if they will pursue charges against those involved in this incident.
The Brinks truck incident has drawn widespread attention, highlighting the unexpected challenges of cash transport security. Brinks, a leading provider of secure logistics and security services, has not released an official statement beyond confirming the loss.
As the investigation continues, the company and local officials are working to determine whether surveillance footage or witness testimony might assist in identifying those who collected the cash. Residents have been reminded that retaining found money can still constitute a criminal offence under Illinois law.
