Jammu and Kashmir Council for Human Rights (JKCHR) – an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations – has highlighted the incidents of harassment in Kashmir following the Pahalgam incident.

It has called for ensuring the safety and dignity of Kashmiris residing across the country - including traders, students, and families.

In a statement issued on Sunday, JKCHR said the drumming of hatred against Kashmiri citizens in the wake of the tragic Pahalgam incident is an alarming and unacceptable development.

It must be recognized that no community, particularly vulnerable Kashmiri students - male and female - should be made scapegoats for circumstances far beyond their control, it highlighted.

The troubling reports of RSS-affiliated individuals visiting educational institutions, violating the privacy and security of Kashmiri students, and the public assault of Kashmiri female students by Hindu youth, are a grave dereliction of duty by those entrusted with governance, it mentioned.

It must be emphasized that indulging in a "tit-for-tat" mentality, punishing innocent Kashmiri youth and civilians damages India's global image, the statement noted.

JKCHR urged all responsible authorities to take immediate and visible measures to protect all Kashmiri citizens and deter political groups from using tragic incidents as an excuse for bigotry and violence.
