KARACHI:

During the excavation of a well allegedly intended for illegal extraction of oil or gas near the Malir River embankment in Shah Latif Town, one iperson reportedly died due to suffocation.

Upon receiving a call through the Madadgar-15 helpline, local police arrived at the scene and summoned rescue teams.

According to officials, gas cylinders and equipment intended for unauthorized tapping into gas lines were recovered from the vicinity of the well. A strong odor of gas permeated the area, complicating rescue operations.

Rescuers attempted to enter the well but faced significant challenges due to the heavy concentration of gas. Officials from PARCO and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) also reached the site after being notified of the incident.

Police stated that according to PARCO officials, their pipeline is located at a considerable distance from the site of the incident. Two vehicles and a motorcycle were found parked outside the plot.

Authorities reported that a makeshift ladder had been constructed to facilitate access in and out of the well. They added that the deceased's companions initially attempted to retrieve the body but were unsuccessful. Subsequently, they contacted police emergency services before fleeing the scene.

Police further confirmed that Sui Gas authorities have temporarily shut down the gas supply in the area. However, due to the persistence of the strong gas odor, recovery of the body has been delayed. Rescue teams and relevant officials remain on site, awaiting safer conditions to proceed with retrieval operations.
