Scott Clifton, star of The Bold and the Beautiful, recently opened up about his character Liam Spencer's dramatic health scare and his evolving relationship with Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) after the reveal of a terminal brain tumor.
Clifton, 40, discussed his initial concerns about Liam’s repetitive love triangle with Steffy and Hope (Annika Noelle), which he felt risked making his character less relatable. However, Clifton now feels excited about the new direction, noting that the weighty storyline is a welcome challenge.
In an interview with Soap Opera Digest on April 24, Clifton explained how he was initially "worried" about Liam's lack of growth in the love triangle but was intrigued when head writer Bradley Bell presented the health storyline. He revealed that his portrayal of Liam navigating the stages of grief would be intense, with Liam moving quickly through denial, anger, and eventual acceptance.
Clifton described the process of playing the emotional roller-coaster as "fun," and he added that his character’s reaction to his diagnosis is integral to the story’s future. He teased that Liam’s emotional state will fluctuate, particularly during moments of denial, adding a complex layer to the role.
Despite his character’s turmoil, Clifton assured fans that Liam isn't trying to disrupt Steffy’s relationship with Finn (Tanner Novlan). "Liam’s not trying to get Steffy back or intervene," he said, emphasizing the strong co-parenting bond between the characters.
The actor also shared his self-consciousness about the portrayal, striving for balance in depicting Liam’s reactions.
