India captain Rohit Sharma became the second Indian cricketer to reach 12,000 T20 runs, achieving the milestone during Mumbai Indians' Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday.
Needing 12 runs to enter the elite club before the match, Rohit reached the landmark in his 466th T20 appearance by scoring a blistering 70 from 46 balls.
He joined Virat Kohli as the only two Indian players to have crossed 12,000 T20 runs.
The 36-year-old opener currently averages 30.81 in the format, with eight centuries to his name.
Globally, Rohit is the eighth player to achieve the feat and the fifth fastest in terms of innings played.
The list is led by West Indies’ Chris Gayle, followed by Kohli and Australia’s David Warner.
Fastest to 12,000 T20 Runs (by innings):
-
Chris Gayle – 345 innings
-
Virat Kohli – 360 innings
-
David Warner – 368 innings
-
Alex Hales – 432 innings
-
Rohit Sharma – 466 innings
Rohit’s milestone comes alongside a return to form in IPL 2025. After a slow start to the tournament, he struck 76 off 45 balls against Chennai Super Kings before the half-century against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
It marks the first time in nine years that Rohit has recorded consecutive fifties in the IPL.
In the same game, Rohit also overtook Kieron Pollard's record for most sixes scored for the Mumbai Indians franchise in IPL history.
Mumbai Indians won against the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets to move third in the IPL table.
