awad Khan was once the darling of Bollywood, winning hearts across India with his charming screen presence and nuanced acting.
However, his flourishing career in the Indian film industry came to a halt in 2016 when a ban on Pakistani artists working in Indian cinema was enforced following rising political tensions.
The move meant that Fawad, along with other Pakistani stars, was no longer allowed to work in India, a major disappointment to fans on both sides of the border.
Despite the forced pause, Fawad Khan's brief stint in Bollywood left a lasting impact.
He made his debut opposite Sonam Kapoor in Khoobsurat (2014), a light-hearted romantic comedy that earned him a massive fan following. The role won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, marking him as a rare Pakistani talent to receive such recognition in India.
He then went on to star in Kapoor & Sons (2016) alongside Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra. His performance as a closeted gay man in a complex family drama was widely praised for its sensitivity and depth.
In the same year, he appeared in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in a cameo role, playing Anushka Sharma’s ex-boyfriend.
Even after the ban, Fawad Khan’s popularity among Indian fans remained strong, with many regularly praising his past work and hoping for his return.
That wish is finally being fulfilled. Fawad is making his Bollywood comeback with Abir Gulaal, in which he stars opposite Vaani Kapoor.
The duo have been promoting the film in Dubai, drawing excitement from fans across the globe.
In a recent interview, Fawad reflected fondly on his experiences with his Bollywood co-stars.
“Sonam Kapoor is unfiltered, which is amazing about her—she says whatever is on her mind. She is a good person at heart. Alia has a lot of energy and is also an amazing person to work with—you have to be on your toes when you are working with her. Anushka, again, is someone with great energy. Vaani is also a very gifted performer. They are all talented and genuinely good-hearted people.”
Aside from his Bollywood ventures, Fawad remains one of the most beloved stars in Pakistan, known for dramas like Humsafar, Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Ashk, Kuch Pyar Ka Pagal Pan Bhi Tha, Akbari Asghari, and Dastan.
His crossover appeal, good looks, and reserved yet magnetic personality have made him a rare star who can charm audiences across cultures.
Abir Gulaal is slated for release on May 9, 2025.
