Netflix’s hit thriller You returns on 24 April for its fifth and final season, and it’s promising to go out with a bang.
After everything that happened in season 4, Joe Goldberg’s fate is finally on the line—but before we get there, it’s worth recapping just how far things spiralled last time.

1. Joe starts over as Jonathan Moore in London
At the end of season 3, Joe faked his own death, chopped off his toe, and left his son behind. In season 4, he resurfaces in London with a new identity—Professor Jonathan Moore—and tries to start a quiet life. But fans know Joe’s “fresh starts” never stay quiet for long.
2. He infiltrates a social circle of London’s elite
Joe ends up entangled with London’s most powerful and obnoxious socialites. Though he loathes their self-importance, he becomes part of their world, including characters like Lady Phoebe, Kate, and Adam. Soon, members of this inner circle start turning up dead.
3. The 'Eat The Rich Killer' mystery unfolds
A murderer nicknamed the “Eat the Rich killer” starts targeting the wealthy group Joe has joined. Surprisingly, Joe tries to protect them and investigate the crimes, suggesting he may be trying to change. But in a dark twist, it turns out he’s the killer—without realising it.
4. Joe’s new romance with Kate Lockwood
Joe falls for Kate, a clever socialite with more depth than most of her friends. Like Love Quinn, Kate has a powerful and dangerous family, and her romance with Joe quickly becomes serious. But with Joe’s past, danger is never far behind.
5. Rhys Montrose isn’t real—he’s a hallucination
One of the season’s biggest reveals is that Rhys Montrose, whom Joe believes is the real killer, is a figment of his imagination. Joe has been committing the murders himself, while hallucinating a version of Rhys who encourages his worst impulses.
6. Joe reaches a breaking point
Joe’s mental state deteriorates when it’s revealed that he kidnapped Marienne and kept her drugged in a cage. “In reality, he had brutalized Marienne and held her captive, confirming just how far gone Joe was.” His delusions have crossed a new line.
7. Lady Phoebe leaves Adam behind for good
Lady Phoebe ends her toxic relationship with Adam after learning he was cheating and only after her money. By the finale, she’s left high society behind and is teaching children in Thailand—one of the few characters to get a happy ending.
8. Nadia pays the price for learning too much
Joe frames his student Nadia after she uncovers his crimes and frees Marienne. “By the end of season 4, Nadia is in prison, refusing to speak or attempt to defend herself.” Joe, who once protected young people, has now turned on one.
9. Joe accepts who he really is
Joe kills Kate’s father and doesn’t try to justify it. Unlike previous seasons, where he saw himself as a good person making bad choices, Joe now embraces his identity as a killer—making him more dangerous than ever.
10. Joe and Kate start a new life in New York
The season ends with Joe and Kate living in New York as a powerful public couple. Joe’s image has been fully rehabilitated, and with Kate’s influence, it seems he can do anything without consequence. Season 5 is set to be his final chapter.
