Kanye West backs Drake’s UMG lawsuit, declares he’s 'Team Drake' in recent turn of events

Kanye West praises Drake’s legal fight against UMG, calling it a historic win and urging industry unity.

Kanye West has voiced strong support for Drake's ongoing lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), calling it a monumental victory for the music industry.

In a post shared on Twitter on April 17, West praised Drake’s legal battle, declaring it “the biggest victory in music history,” and urged fellow rappers to unite against the industry’s influential powers rather than targeting each other.

West emphasized that he was now fully backing Drake, stating, “I’m Team Drake 100 percent.” He also expressed solidarity with other artists, including Kendrick Lamar, and suggested that Lamar should also focus his attention on challenging UMG. This marks a significant shift from West’s previous remarks, including lines in his “Like That” remix, where he had targeted both Drake and UMG CEO Lucian Grainge.

In his updated lawsuit, filed on April 16, Drake accuses UMG of using its considerable influence to orchestrate Kendrick Lamar’s performance of the diss track "Not Like Us" during the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show. The lawsuit alleges that the label used the event's massive 133.5 million-viewer audience to publicly damage Drake’s character. It further claims that the track was promoted during the 2025 Grammy Awards, where it won Song and Record of the Year, amplifying its negative impact.

Drake’s legal team asserts that UMG’s actions were part of a broader campaign to tarnish the rapper’s reputation. UMG, however, has dismissed the lawsuit as "frivolous" and warned Drake that the legal action could lead to reputational and financial repercussions.

The legal dispute has sparked a conversation about the power dynamics within the music industry and the need for artists to challenge the control held by major labels.
