Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has lauded Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan for his all-round performances in the ongoing HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, while also voicing strong support for Azam Khan amid criticism.
Speaking on a local digital sports platform, Akhtar said he primarily values Shadab for his bowling, calling it the key element of his game.
"I am more interested in him as a bowler and I always recognise him as a bowler — I don’t care about his batting," Akhtar said.
The former fast bowler acknowledged Shadab’s contributions with the bat, especially under pressure, and credited him for stepping up when required.
Akhtar also spoke about the importance of a positive team environment, noting that performance often depends on support from management.
"Players are shaped in dressing rooms and team environments. If you create difficulties for them, their performance will reflect that. They’ll think, ‘I’m not happy with the team or management,’" he remarked.
He further praised Shadab’s leadership, describing him as a "very smart player" who keeps Islamabad United cohesive.
"He keeps the team united and doesn’t allow any issues to arise," Akhtar said.
Turning to Azam Khan, the former Test bowler defended the wicketkeeper-batter, who has faced criticism for his form and fitness.
"Azam Khan is a very good cricketer who has faced unnecessary backlash," Akhtar stated.
Highlighting Azam’s power-hitting skills, Akhtar shared an unconventional suggestion for the 26-year-old to counter criticism and inspire others.
"If I were in his place, I’d make a documentary on myself of losing 40 kg in 100 days and then prove my power-hitting by scoring a century in 33 balls," he said.
Directly addressing the batter, Akhtar added, "If you’re listening to me — and I know you always do — just do it and show the world what you’re capable of."
