Kate Cassidy, Liam Payne’s girlfriend, has opened up about the final moments she shared with the late One Direction star, six months after his tragic death.
In an emotional interview on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Cassidy recalled the last day they spent together in Buenos Aires, just before Payne’s fatal fall from his hotel balcony in October 2024. Cassidy described their final day as “beautiful,” remembering how they had a peaceful breakfast, went horseback riding, and enjoyed each other's company in the countryside. “It brings me pain because I can’t fully process that that day was the last time I was able to touch Liam,” she shared, but also found peace in knowing that their goodbye was heartfelt.
Reflecting on their relationship, Cassidy spoke about the closeness they shared, saying their goodbyes were often long and emotional, even when apart for a short period. On their final day, as Cassidy was preparing to leave for her flight, she recalled her last conversation with Payne. “I just kept going on and on and on about how much I love him... He interrupted me and just said, ‘Kate, you’re going to miss your flight. You’re acting like this is the last time you’re ever going to see me again,’” she explained. At the time, Cassidy laughed and assured him she was just being silly, saying, “I know, I need to get in the car. I can’t miss my flight.”
Looking back, Cassidy described the exchange as “chilling,” reflecting on how those were truly the last moments they shared. Despite this, she found solace in the heartfelt goodbye they exchanged, saying, “In a way, I think that the way that we said goodbye to each other, I’m so blessed. And this is where I get that peace from it, that it was that heartfelt, beautiful — I didn’t know of it — but obviously our last goodbye.”
Cassidy also shared an emotional moment on the podcast when she read aloud a love letter Payne had written her. She described how he often expressed his love through handwritten notes, leaving them around their home as a reminder of his affection. One particular letter stood out to her, where he wrote, “The reason I picked this watch out for you is because it doesn’t have any numbers on it, and my love for you is endless. It literally means eternity. So now every time you look down at your wrist, you can know and remember that my love for you is timeless. We have all the time in the world to learn our love language for each other, and I hope and pray that I get this right for you with every tick and every tock this watch makes from this second onwards.”
As Cassidy read the note, she became emotional, saying, “It’s just so hard to process that. It’s like, we thought we had all this time, and he thought we had all this time, and it was just taken away.” She explained that the watch he gave her was now something she would cherish forever, especially after his passing. “I read this note so often, and I look down at my wrist and just like he wants me to look down at my wrist and remember him.”
In the interview, Cassidy also spoke about Payne’s struggles with alcohol and drug use but emphasized that he was in a good headspace when she left Argentina. She reflected on their relationship, noting how they were planning to start a new chapter in their lives together. They had recently moved to Florida, bought a new house, and even adopted a dog, all of which they were excited about. Despite the challenges Payne faced, Cassidy holds on to the memories they shared, particularly their final day together and the love they expressed in their last moments.
Cassidy's appearance on the podcast comes a few months after she opened up about the devastating loss in an emotional interview with The Sun. Despite Payne's struggles, she continues to find comfort in the love they shared, carrying his memory with her every day.
