US Congressional delegation visits Kartarpur Corridor

LAHORE/ ISLAMABAD:

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday extended greetings to the Sikh community in Pakistan and around the world on the occasion of Vaisakhi.

In his message, the president noted that Vaisakhi is a symbol of Pakistan's beauty in its cultural and religious diversity.

He observed that the Sikh community was playing a prominent role in the development and prosperity of Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his warm greetings to Sikhs living in Pakistan and around the world.

"This festive occasion marks the ripening of the Rabi harvest—a time of great joy for farmers as they reap the fruits of their hard labour," he said in a separate message on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi, accompanied by a US Congressional delegation, visited the Kartarpur Corridor to join the Sikh community in celebrating the festival of Baisakhi.

The visiting delegation included US Congressmen Thomas Richard Suozzi and Jonathan Jackson, Acting U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Natalie Baker, and US Consul General in Lahore Kristen K Hawkins. The dignitaries were warmly received by prominent Sikh community leaders at the Darshan Deori.

During the visit, the interior minister and the US lawmakers paid their respects at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib and viewed historical relics associated with Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji. They were also briefed on the significance and facilities of the Kartarpur Corridor and participated in a special prayer ceremony.

The US Congressional delegation also visited Jati Umra in Raiwind and met with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

According to party sources, the meeting focused on matters of mutual interest. The delegation arrived at Jati Umra after attending the Vaisakhi celebrations in Kartarpur.
