KARACHI:

House officers at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital staged a protest on Monday, surrounding the director's office to demand a salary increase. The protesting doctors warned that if their demands are not addressed during the City Council meeting on April 21, they will escalate their protest to the KMC office.

The doctors stated that despite completing five years of medical education, they are paid only Rs 30,000 to Rs 45,000 per month, while house officers in other government hospitals receive up to Rs 70,000.

Speaking to the media, Medical Superintendent said that 230 offer letters had been issued, but only nine doctors accepted them. He noted that the patient load is increasing, and many of the previous house officers have already been promoted. He added that the mayor has assured them that their salaries will be increased by June.

Following the protest, the house officers were assured of a meeting with the Mayor within two days, leading them to temporarily call off the protest.
