Charli XCX stirred up controversy after she was seen wearing a ‘Miss Should Be Headliner’ sash at a Coachella afterparty on Saturday night.
The 32-year-old singer, who had earlier performed her Brat set on the Coachella stage at 7:15 PM, kept the celebrations going, but her bold accessory quickly became the center of attention.
While Charli, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, rocked the mainstage, legendary rock band Green Day, winners of 96 awards and nominees for 218, held the headlining spot.
As Charli partied behind the DJ booth in a white dress, the sash sparked speculation that she was throwing shade at the festival’s decision.
A playful photo of her sticking her tongue out while flaunting the sash only fueled the conversation online.
Fans flooded X (formerly known as Twitter) with reactions, many criticizing the pop star’s move: “one 'summer' album and these girls are acting like they're bigger than everyone else," one wrote.
Others chimed in with comments like, “No, she sucked last night. It was the same s**t she's been doing on her tour,” and “A two hit wonder is not worthy of headlining.”
Some pointed out Green Day’s status, saying, “To the main public she's not bigger than Green Day” and “No one listens to that 2024 album anymore, next.”
Other reactions included, “She only had one viral album be so fr rn,” “I still don't know who that is. Is she popular?” and “one mediocre album had her acting up like this????”
Charli’s career achievements are nothing to dismiss, though — she has racked up 172 award nominations and 47 wins.
Her Brat album, released in 2024, brought her a surge in popularity, especially after her single Guess earned her a UK No.1 for the first time in over ten years.
Still, Green Day’s legacy in the music world remains towering.
According to the Official Charts website, they’ve secured five UK No.1 albums, 10 Top 10s, 17 Top 40s, and have spent nearly 500 weeks on the Top 75 charts.
During her Coachella set, Charli shared the stage with some major guests. Billie joined her for the live debut of their Guess remix, while Lorde made a surprise appearance for Girl, So Confusing and Talk Talk.
Following her performance with Lorde — who recently teased new solo music for the first time since 2021 — Charli hyped fans up by announcing, “Lorde summer 2025!”
The audience included Hollywood stars like Timothée Chalamet and viral sensations like model Alex Consani, who took part in the popular "Apple dance" moment.
As her set wrapped up, Charli left fans buzzing by projecting a cryptic message behind her: “Does this mean that Brat Summer is finally over????? idk?”
But fans can rest easy — Brat Summer is far from finished, with Charli scheduled to hit Glastonbury, LIDO Festival, and Parklife later this year.
