OpenAI has officially rolled out a powerful new memory update for ChatGPT, enabling the AI to recall details from all your past chats — making interactions more personalized than ever.
Previously, ChatGPT’s memory had to be manually toggled on for specific items.
Now, it can automatically pick up and retain details like your preferences, interests, or even recurring topics.
For example, if you’ve mentioned that you’re a baseball fan or prefer concise answers, ChatGPT can now weave that context into future replies without you having to repeat yourself.
“This is a surprisingly great feature,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted, saying it reflects a future where AI becomes “extremely useful and personalized.”
This update represents a major shift in how users interact with AI.
Rather than treating each conversation like a blank slate, ChatGPT can now build a more continuous and customized experience over time.
Whether you're using it for writing, brainstorming, tutoring, or personal projects, the AI can now adapt to your style, remember past discussions, and even anticipate your needs based on prior chats.
Importantly, users still retain full control over what the AI remembers.
Memory can be turned off at any time via the Settings menu, and you can review, update, or delete specific memories through a dedicated “Manage memories” section.
OpenAI emphasizes that privacy and transparency are key parts of the feature’s design, ensuring users know exactly what’s being remembered and can manage it easily.
Currently, the memory update is available for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, with broader rollout plans ahead.
However, it’s not yet available in some regions, including the UK, Norway, and Switzerland. Team, Enterprise, and Edu customers are expected to gain access to the memory feature in the coming weeks, according to OpenAI’s roadmap.
With this upgrade, OpenAI is steadily pushing forward a vision where AI doesn’t just respond to your prompts — it learns from you, grows with you, and becomes a tool that feels more like a helpful partner in your day-to-day life.
