KARACHI:

Candidates from the Fishermen Alliance Panel secured victory in the long-awaited elections for the Fishermen's Cooperative Society held on Thursday. The elections, which had been postponed for five years, saw Abdul Rashid leading with 721 votes, followed by Dr Yusuf with 680 votes, Saleem Didag with 648 votes, Muhammad Shakeel with 574 votes, Shahzad Jamot with 571 votes, Rahim Bakhsh with 569 votes, and Haji Khan Mir with 554 votes.

Voter turnout was low primarily due to the use of outdated voter lists that still included names of deceased members, which led to confusion and dissatisfaction among potential voters.

Three panels were in the run: the Fishermen's Union Panel, the Local and Basic Fishermen's Panel, and the People's Friend Fishermen's Panel. However, the Fishermen Alliance Panel emerged victorious, securing the majority of the seats.

The last Fishermen's Cooperative Society elections took place on February 24, 2017, with the next elections originally scheduled for March 2020. However, a series of delays orchestrated by the Sindh government-appointed administration, which cited various reasons, led to a prolonged postponement.
