LAHORE:

Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar has said and the recruitment process for 4,000 personnel of the Crime Control Department is under way in phases following the approval of funds for the purpose.

Presiding over a meeting in the wake of the approval of the CCD Ordinance, he reviewed the steps being taken to activate the department. Discussions were held on human resources, logistics, terms of reference and administrative matters for the new department.

CCD Additional IG Sohail Zafar Chattha said highly professional and experienced crime-fighter officers had been selected for the department that would target those involved in heinous crimes.

IG Usman Anwar said that while the CCD faced significant challenges, he was hopeful for its success.

The regional and district police officers are initially providing the required human resources, offices, transport, and logistics to the CCD.

The procurement of transport, furniture and logistics will begin soon.

Buildings for the CCD police stations are being identified.

The CCD will be supported by a detailed criminal database, surveillance and monitoring systems, advanced locators and information technology.

A Punjab Police spokesperson stated that the CCD would be responsible for ensuring the arrest and conviction of major drug dealers and dangerous criminals, elimination of no-go areas and security of sensitive events. The targets also include the arrest of suspects in kidnapping for ransom, extortion, and robberies involving murders and rapes.

Curbing vehicle theft, land mafia, inter-provincial gangs, and coordination with other districts for crime suppression are also part of the new department's duties.

The IGP emphasised that all police units must enhance coordination to meet major challenges such as terrorism, unrest, law and order, and crime eradication.
