LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday urged the Punjab government to declare a water emergency in response to the worsening water crisis in the province.

Justice Shahid Karim made the observation while hearing petitions filed by Haroon Farooq and others regarding ineffective measures to control smog.

At the outset of the proceedings, a member of the Judicial Water and Environment Commission informed the court that the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) must take urgent steps to prevent water wastage. He also stressed the need for a structured timetable for the operation of tube wells in urban areas.

Expressing concern over the alarming water shortage, the court emphasized the need for immediate and practical measures to prevent water wastage.

It ordered that final notices be issued to large housing societies failing to curb excessive water use. Justice Karim warned that if individuals are seen washing vehicles with hoses in these societies, the respective society offices would be sealed.
