The occasion of Eid comes with a divine opportunity to not only thank the Almighty for his bounties and blessings, but also to embrace humanity by putting aside all prejudices of status and society. The culmination of the holy month of Ramazan comes with a reminder of how time-phased abstinence for the sake of salvation can be practised throughout the year for the collective good of society.

There are millions amongst us who unfortunately fall in the ambit of have-nots, and are denied the essentials of life. Ramazan through fasting and piousness instils a special feeling for others, and reminds us that by sharing and caring a new world of harmony, empathy and congeniality can be built, underscoring the true message of religious fervour that the holy month teaches.

As the world is engrossed in wars, epidemics and economic revulsion, Ramazan simply furthers the envelope by stating that apart from supplications and fasting, there is a lot that a practising Muslim can do by indulging in charity, spreading smile and being conscious of the needs of the deprived.

Pakistanis, being a resilient and faith-driven nation, have a responsibility to dispense in the spirit of Ramazan. All that the countrymen need to do today is unite and do away with the slurs of otherness. It is an admissible fact that political instability and economic meltdown have had a negative impact on social cohesion, and the country is on the verge of an existential crisis.

Extremism, terrorism and intolerance have taken a toll, but can conveniently be defeated by abiding by the glorious teachings of sacrifice and devotion. Likewise, the teachings of Ramazan will surely come to our rescue if we can give up egocentrism, walk a few extra miles to accommodate the aggrieved sections of society and usher in an aura of justice and healing.

The values of sympathy and solicitude will give way to serenity, and once again we can turn the society around on mellifluous lines. The Almighty seeks nothing from His creation but to see an egalitarian and just society. Let's embrace each other by burying the hatchet. Eid Mubarak!
