Sony Pictures has announced that the live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda will be released theatrically on March 26, 2027.
The highly anticipated adventure film, co-produced by Sony and Nintendo, was revealed on Nintendo’s new app, Nintendo Today, more than a year after the project was first announced in November 2023.
At that time, Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed the film’s development on social media, sharing that the movie would be produced by himself alongside Avi Arad. Miyamoto expressed his excitement for the collaboration with Arad, known for producing major blockbusters, and emphasized Nintendo’s significant involvement in the film’s production.

Wes Ball, the director behind The Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is attached to direct the film, as well as produce alongside Joe Hartwick Jr. through their production company, Oddball Entertainment. The film will be co-financed by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Nintendo, with Nintendo providing the majority of the funding. However, further details about the casting and story are yet to be revealed.
Miyamoto shared an update at the time of the announcement, stating, “I have been working on the live-action film of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ for many years now with Avi Arad-san. We have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
The film gained further momentum after the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a collaboration between Nintendo, Universal Pictures, and Illumination Entertainment. The animated film, released in April 2023, was a massive box office success, grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the 18th-highest-grossing global release of all time.
