Suspect dies in alleged police encounter

Police claim car thieves opened fire on cops in Ratta Amral

RAWALPINDI:

A late-night police encounter in Rawalpindi's Ratta Amral area ended with one suspect dead while two others managed to escape.

According to a police spokesperson, three suspects had stolen a vehicle from New Town and were attempting to flee when Ratta Amral police tried to stop them at a checkpoint.

Instead of complying, the suspects abandoned the car and opened fire on the police before fleeing into a nearby graveyard. Police reportedly pursued the suspects as they continued firing.

During the exchange of gunfire, one suspect was injured and later succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.

The spokesperson said senior police officials arrived at the scene, and a search operation is underway to identify the deceased suspect and track down the two who escaped. The stolen vehicle has been recovered.

Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Khalid Hamdani commended the police team for their "swift response and bravery" in recovering the stolen car despite coming under fire.

He stated that those who attack citizens or law enforcement will not escape justice.
