Four wounded in Amsterdam stabbing near central square, suspect arrested

Four people were injured in a stabbing attack near Dam Square in central Amsterdam on Thursday, according to Dutch police. One suspect has been arrested, and authorities say the motive behind the assault remains under investigation.
The incident occurred on a nearby street, prompting a swift emergency response. Police cordoned off the area as multiple ambulances and a trauma helicopter arrived to treat the victims. Dam Square was reopened after about two hours.
Initial reports suggested five people were wounded, but police later clarified that the suspect was among the injured. “The suspect was overpowered with the help of a citizen,” police said in a statement posted on social media. “As his leg was injured, he was taken to a hospital.”
No details have been released regarding the condition of the victims or the identity of the suspect.
Images from local news outlet ANP showed a person being wheeled into an ambulance on a stretcher. Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema reportedly left a meeting in city hall upon learning of the attack.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the incident was terror-related, emphasizing that the motive is still under investigation.
