COAS Gen Asim's mother laid to rest

The mother of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir, who passed away on Monday, was laid to rest at the Army Graveyard after funeral prayers were offered at the Race Course Ground in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) released a statement on Tuesday, announcing the passing of General Asim Munir's mother "on the 23rd of Ramazan (March 24)", and offering prayers for her highest ranks in Heaven.

The funeral prayers, held at the Race Course Ground in Rawalpindi, were attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, federal ministers, chief ministers, civil and military officials, and others.

The army chief personally led the funeral prayers for his mother, and expressed gratitude to all those who attended. Tight security arrangements were made on the occasion. Later, his mother was laid to rest in the Army Graveyard.

President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed their deep sorrow over the demise of the army chief's mother. The president, in a statement, extended condolences and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family in this hour of grief.

"We share the grief of General Syed Asim Munir over his mother's passing. My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved family during this difficult time," the president said. He prayed to Almighty Allah for peace for the departed soul and strength for the bereaved family to bear the loss.

The prime minister also expressed solidarity with the bereaved family in this hour of grief, according to a press release from the Prime Minister's Office. He also prayed to Almighty Allah for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also expressed deep sorrow and grief over passing of the mother of General Asim Munir and extending their heartfelt condolences.
