Thomas Tuchel’s England claimed a second successive victory in World Cup qualifying, overcoming Latvia 3-0 at Wembley. The result, however, came after another frustrating battle against a lower-ranked opponent before England’s dominance eventually paid off.

Latvia, ranked 140th in the world, frustrated England for long spells, mirroring Albania’s resistance in Tuchel’s debut match.

It took Chelsea captain Reece James to break the deadlock, curling in a stunning 20-yard free-kick seven minutes before half-time—his first England start since September 2022 marked in style.

James, who has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, showcased his technique by curling a precise effort over the defensive wall from 25 yards out in the 37th minute. The strike left Latvia goalkeeper Krisjanis Zviedris with no chance and was reminiscent of England greats known for their set-piece prowess.

This was James' first goal for England in his 18th cap.

Despite controlling possession, England struggled to extend their lead until captain Harry Kane found the net in the 68th minute, steering in Declan Rice’s cross for his 71st international goal. Kane extended his record as England's highest goalscorer of all time.

As Latvia’s resistance faded, substitute Eberechi Eze added a third, scoring his first England goal via a deflected strike in the 76th minute.

The win sees Tuchel become the first England men’s manager since Fabio Capello to win his first two matches, as England continue their push toward World Cup qualification.
