KARACHI:

A social worker was killed and two others were injured in a shooting incident near Chalia Market in New Karachi on Friday. The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Abdul Jabbar, who was known for organising free Iftar meals for the community daily during Ramzdan.

The deadly shooting took place shortly before Iftar, when unidentified gunmen, believed to have been traveling on a motorcycle, opened fire. According to eyewitnesses, some people at the scene returned fire in self-defence, resulting in the tragic death of Abdul Jabbar and injuries to two others, Babuuddin and Ehtesham.

The bereaved family expressed deep grief and outrage over the incident, with Abdul Jabbar's son, grandson, and nephew demanding justice and the arrest of the perpetrators. They recounted how they were informed of the shooting and rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, only to find that Abdul Jabbar had succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was a well-respected figure in the community, actively involved in charitable work and supporting the underprivileged.

A police party, led by SHO Faizul Hassan, has launched an investigation into the incident. Early findings suggest that the assailants, riding a motorcycle, fired upon the group, triggering a retaliatory exchange of gunfire. Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage to gather more information on the suspects.

This incident has sparked anger among local residents, who have voiced concerns over the increasing number of extortion-related crimes in the area.
