Producer Sonia Friedman and actor Hugh Jackman have announced the launch of a new theater company, Together, aimed at providing "intimate and accessible" live theater experiences.
The company, founded in collaboration with director Ian Rickson, seeks to create an innovative space where audiences can engage with theater in a fresh and engaging way.Together will focus on small-scale productions, featuring short runs of fully rehearsed, full-length plays, alongside readings, panel discussions, and other events across the US, UK, and beyond. The company places an emphasis on collaboration, equality in pay for actors, and shared creative credit, striving to offer actors, writers, and directors an opportunity to experiment and take risks outside of the commercial theater world.
The founders explained that the productions will strip down to their essentials, with minimal décor, to highlight the raw power of storytelling. The goal is to deliver an intimate experience for the audience, with actors performing just feet away, creating a heightened sense of connection and community.
In a joint statement, Friedman and Jackman described their vision for Together, saying: “We wanted to create a company where artists could experiment, explore, and take risks without the pressures of commercial theater.” They also expressed a commitment to making theater affordable and accessible, ensuring that a large portion of the audience can enjoy the performances.
Together’s productions will offer flexibility in terms of performance schedules and repertoire, allowing shows to evolve organically. The company aims to bring the energy and excitement of live performance back to its basics, sharing those moments of spontaneity with the audience and making them part of the creative process.
