The first total lunar eclipse of 2025, known as the "Blood Moon," will occur on the night of March 13-14.

During this event, the moon will be bathed in a deep red hue as it passes through Earth's shadow. While the eclipse will be visible from several parts of the world, the best views will be in the Americas.

Where to See the Blood Moon

North and South America will have the best views, where skywatchers can witness all phases of the eclipse, including the total phase when the moon turns a vibrant red. Regions in the Western United States and Canada are expected to have particularly clear skies.

In Europe, the eclipse will be visible as the moon sets, while in East Asia, Australia, and parts of Africa, viewers will see the event as the moon rises.

Unfortunately, the eclipse won't be visible in Pakistan, as it will occur during the daytime.

To make the most of this rare event, find a location with minimal light pollution.

While the eclipse can be safely viewed with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope will provide a more detailed and immersive experience.

What Happens During the Eclipse?

The event will last for approximately five to six hours. The most dramatic phase, totality, will last around 65 minutes.

The total eclipse will be at its peak between 2:26 a.m. and 3:31 a.m. Eastern Time. During this time, the moon will glow in various shades of red, making for a stunning sight.

Why Does the Moon Turn Red?

The red color of the Blood Moon is caused by the way Earth's atmosphere scatters sunlight. As sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere, shorter wavelengths, such as blue and violet, are scattered, leaving only the longer red and orange wavelengths to reach the moon.

The exact shade of red depends on the moon's position in Earth's shadow and atmospheric conditions on that night.

Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch with the naked eye.

However, if you're looking to get a closer look at the moon’s surface or observe the finer details as it transitions through the eclipse phases, a telescope or binoculars can enhance your experience.

This lunar eclipse will be the first total lunar eclipse since 2022, and it promises to be a spectacular event for both seasoned skywatchers and casual observers.

Be sure to mark your calendar for March 13-14, 2025, and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Blood Moon.
