ISLAMABAD:

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appreciated on Monday the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for cooperating with the government and assured it of addressing Sindh's concerns over the controversial canals issue, sources said.

Shehbaz hosted Iftar-dinner for a PPP delegation led by party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at the Prime Minister's House. Talking to the delegation, the prime minister said that the federation, provinces and all the political parties should work together to create a better future for the country.

The PPP delegation comprised Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider.

The delegation raised the issue of six canals from Indus, the deteriorating law and order situation in K-P's Kurram district, lack of assistance for the flood victims of Balochistan and other matters relating to their coalition.

In response, Shahbaz assured the PPP of convening a high-level meeting soon on the canals issue to take the party into confidence. He also assured the federal government's support for restoring peace in Kurram district and mitigating the problems of flood victims in Balochistan.

"The plan to take canals from the Indus river will not be implemented without taking the PPP into confidence," Shehbaz assured the PPP, according to sources. "A high-level meeting will be called soon in this regard," he added.

The prime minister said that the PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership would meet in Lahore on Saturday to sort out issues related to the alliance in the provinces. He said that Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar had already been given the task in this regard.

Shehbaz appreciated the PPP leadership for coming up to the public expectations in all the four provinces, and for playing an effective and vibrant role in improving the living standard of the common man by cooperating with the government.

According to a handout, the participants of the meeting paid tribute to the prime minister and his team for their efforts to introduce effective policies that brought economic stability. The delegation thanked the prime minister for consulting the allies and respecting their opinions.
