Qinwen Zheng secures straight-sets win against Lulu Sun at Indian Wells Open
Qinwen Zheng overcame Lulu Sun 6-4, 7-5 in the Round of 32 on Court 2 of Indian Wells 2025.
She secured a straight-sets victory to advance. Zheng capitalised on break-point opportunities and held her serve in key moments to edge past her opponent.
Zheng started with a solid first set, breaking Sun’s serve early to gain the advantage. Despite Sun’s 96% first-serve percentage, she struggled to dominate points, winning just 51% on her first serve compared to Zheng’s 59%. Zheng, in contrast, remained composed on serve, taking the set 6-4.
The second set was more competitive, with both players holding serve until Zheng broke late to seal a 7-5 win. Sun fought to stay in the match, converting four of eight break points, but Zheng’s ability to capitalise on six of her 14 opportunities proved decisive.
Both players showed consistency on their second serve, winning 100% of those points. However, Zheng had the overall edge, winning 76 total points to Sun’s 66 and securing 36 receiving points to Sun’s 30. Zheng also won seven consecutive points at one stage, highlighting her ability to control crucial moments.
With this win, Zheng moves forward in the tournament, continuing her pursuit of a deeper run. She will face Ukranian Marta Kostyuk in the next round on Tuesday.
