In an emotional moment during his final media briefing as Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau reflected on the turbulent moments of his nine-year tenure, including the trade tensions with the Donald Trump administration.

Trudeau, who announced in January he would step down amid declining popularity, confirmed he would leave office once the ruling Liberal Party selects a new leader this Sunday.

Trudeau, visibly emotional, spoke about his commitment to prioritizing Canadians throughout his time in office, stating, "I have made sure that every single day in this office I put Canadians first, that I have people's backs, and that's why I am here to tell you all, that we have got you. Even in the very last days of this government, we will not let Canadians down."

In his speech, Trudeau acknowledged the challenges of his time in office, particularly the impact of the trade tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump. "A win-lose between us would actually be worse for them than a win-win," Trudeau remarked, addressing the ongoing trade war. He also criticized Trump’s increasingly transactional approach to international relations.

Trump imposed tariffs of up to 25% on Canadian products entering the US market in 2018, with the move briefly causing market instability before being paused for a month. Trump had also made remarks about potentially making Canada the 51st US state and referred to Trudeau as "Governor."

Trudeau also reflected on the difficult moments of his tenure, including the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, the war in Ukraine, and the volatile situation in the Middle East. “I have had 10 years of Donald Trump, a historic once-in-a-century pandemic, inflation crises, war in Ukraine and the extraordinarily difficult situation in the Middle East... These have been complicated times. This is the job I signed up for. This is the job I will continue to do until the very last moment," he stated.

Trudeau will officially step down once the Liberal Party completes its leadership selection process this Sunday.
