The 2025 Oscar nominations were led by Emilia Pérez, which secured 13 nominations, placing it among classics like Gone With the Wind and Mary Poppins, as well as modern hits like Oppenheimer and The Shape of Water.

Netflix’s Spanish-language crime drama earned nods across multiple categories, including Best Picture, Best Original Song (for two different tracks), and acting nominations for Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña.

Initially considered a frontrunner for Best Picture, Emilia Pérez faced backlash after past racist and offensive tweets by Gascón resurfaced. The actor—the first openly trans actress to be nominated—embarked on a public apology tour, but the controversy only deepened.

The film has set a record for the most nominations ever received by a non-English-language film in Oscars history.

Directed by Jacques Audiard, Emilia Pérez is a musical crime drama about a Mexican cartel leader who undergoes a gender transition to escape their past.

Following closely behind are The Brutalist and Wicked, each securing 10 nominations. The Brutalist explores the journey of a Holocaust survivor chasing his American dream as an architect, while Wicked serves as a cinematic adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, telling the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West.
