ISLAMABAD:

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior on Friday demanded an immediate briefing from Sindh's police chief regarding the murder of Mustafa Amir, as shocking revelations surfaced about the case's links to drug trafficking, cryptocurrency and the dark web.

Chairing the panel, Raja Khurram Nawaz insisted that a briefing on the case should be prioritised.

However, the additional secretary interior informed the panel that the Inspector General (IG) Sindh had not appeared due to a delay in receiving the committee's notice.

He requested that the briefing be scheduled for the next meeting. However, MNA Abdul Qadir Patel strongly criticised the IG's absence, saying, "This is an extremely serious case—at the very least, the IG Sindh should have attended".

Committee member Agha Rafiullah further revealed that a DSP had been shot twice in connection with the case, while also raising concerns about the investigation. "The accused has a relative on the investigative team." He insisted that a case of this sensitivity should have already undergone serious and impartial inquiries.

Nabeel Gabol added that federal agencies, including the ANF and the FIA, should have already taken action.

Abdul Qadir Patel revealed that authorities had recovered a call centre and 62 laptops, along with evidence connected to cryptocurrency. He added that fraudulent bank accounts had been set up and alleged that drugs were transported from Islamabad to Karachi using courier services.

The case, he added, also involved transactions on the dark web and possible illegal arms purchases.

If this had happened in any other country, all agencies would have been mobilised by now," Patel said, criticising the inaction of the FIA and other federal authorities.

Meanwhile, Additional Director General of the FIA Cybercrime Wing Waqaruddin Syed assured the panel that the Sindh police were currently handling the case, and FIA would investigate when it was referred to them.

Patel slammed the approach, questioning, "Are you waiting for the case to come to you? It is your job to initiate investigations, not wait for them to land at your doorstep".

Subsequently, the NA panel summoned IG Sindh to appear in the next session for a detailed briefing on the Mustafa Amir case.

In addition, the interior ministry has been directed to initiate an investigation through FIA and ANF to uncover the full extent of the case and its potential links to organized crime.

Earlier, the session began with committee members objecting to the absence of the interior minister and secretary interior.

Expressing his discontent, MNA Nabeel Gabol stated, "At the very least, the secretary interior should have been present".
