Zendaya has officially joined the cast of Shrek 5, marking a major addition to the beloved animated franchise.
The news was revealed Thursday morning through the series' official social media accounts, reposting her 2017 tweet which said, "I watch Shrek too often in my adulthood", captioning it, 'this aged well'.
Zendaya will voice the daughter of Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz), making her a key character in the highly anticipated sequel. In addition to Zendaya, Eddie Murphy will reprise his iconic role as Donkey.
Scheduled for release on December 23, 2026, Shrek 5 will be the first new Shrek film in over 16 years, following the release of Shrek Forever After in 2010. While plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to continue the franchise's tradition of humor and heart.
The film is directed by Walt Dohrn, known for his work on the Trolls franchise, who also contributed to the second, third, and fourth Shrek films. Dohrn is co-directing alongside Brad Ableson, who worked on Minions: The Rise of Gru. Producing the film are Gina Shay, also from the Trolls series, and Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, the studio behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Shrek has become one of DreamWorks Animation’s most successful franchises, beginning with the 2001 film that grossed over $488 million worldwide and won the first-ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Its four films have earned nearly $2.9 billion globally, along with a Broadway musical, theme park attractions, and a spin-off film series focused on Puss in Boots.
Zendaya’s casting in Shrek 5 follows her recent success in Dune, Euphoria, and her upcoming role in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. She is also expected to appear in the next Spider-Man film.
