Pakistani bowlers lacking 'discipline:' Waqar Younis

Waqar Younis criticised Pakistan’s bowlers for their lack of discipline after ICC Champions Trophy loss to India.

Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis has criticised the national team’s bowlers for their lack of discipline following their six-wicket defeat to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

India successfully chased down a 242-run target, securing the top spot in Group A and leaving Pakistan on the brink of elimination.

Speaking after the match, Younis highlighted Pakistan’s inability to defend their total, pointing out that the bowlers strayed from their plans. “We like batting first. But there weren’t enough runs on the board, and when you don’t score enough, this is what happens,” Younis said.

“You over-try things. There’s a need for discipline in bowling. Indian bowlers were disciplined. We didn’t have enough discipline in our bowling.”

Younis also questioned the team’s lack of intent, stating that Pakistan never put India under pressure despite a promising start.

“Babar was looking good. Once he got out, Rizwan came in, first ball, bang, a four. The intent was there, and it seemed like we would put up a good score. I honestly don’t know what happened after. I don’t think anybody knows what happened.”

Pakistan’s bowling attack struggled to contain India’s batting lineup, even after the early dismissal of Rohit Sharma. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 100, his 51st ODI century, guided India to victory with ease.

The result has intensified scrutiny on Pakistan’s performance, with Younis and other former cricketers calling for better discipline and strategy moving forward.
