Karachi’s University Road has been closed to traffic following damage to a water pipeline during the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, authorities said on Monday.

Traffic police said Water Board officials and machinery had arrived near Old Sabzi Mandi to repair the damaged line.

The closure has disrupted traffic between Hassan Square and New Town, forcing commuters to take alternative routes.

Vehicles coming from NIPA are being diverted via the Expo turning, while those from Essa Nagri are being redirected towards the stadium through the Hassan Square bridge.

Authorities have advised motorists to use alternative routes to avoid congestion.

The BRT project has previously come under scrutiny for infrastructure-related disruptions. Earlier, the Sindh High Court (SHC) summoned Karachi’s mayor and the secretary of transport over concerns regarding tree-cutting along the BRT route.

The secretary of forests told the court that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is responsible for trees within the city, while the forest department’s jurisdiction begins outside urban limits.

The court sought a report from the KMC on the matter.
