KARACHI:

The Hassan Brohi Goth in Surjani Town lacks proper sewerage system as a result area residents have dug eight-foot-deep pits as manholes outside their homes on self-help basis to drain sewerage water.

This was stated by Muhammad Faisal, the father of three-year-old Asadullah, who died after falling into an open manhole outside his house.

Faisal said, "My son fell into one of these manholes and lost his life." He added that he has already lost three children, and now Asadullah also died in this tragic incident.

Faisal drives a rickshaw and also does car polishing. "The manhole outside our house was full, and a sanitary worker was cleaning it. Meanwhile, the worker went to dispose of the wastewater when my three-year-old son went outside.

"After some time, my wife went out to check on him, but he was nowhere. She then went to check at his grandfather's house, but he wasn't there even.

As she was returning home, she noticed some movement in the manhole outside our house. She saw our son had fallen in."

She promptly pulled Asadullah out of the manhole with the help of neighbours and rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he did not survive.
