Nathan MacKinnon and Sam Bennett also scored for Canada, while Jordan Binnington made 31 saves.

Brady Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson responded for the U.S., with Connor Hellebuyck stopping 24 shots.

The high-stakes clash unfolded amid rising political tensions. U.S. President Donald Trump, who had mused about making Canada the "51st state," posted on social media ahead of the game, while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later responded with: “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game.”

Canada coach Jon Cooper acknowledged the weight of the victory, stating, "This wasn't a win for themselves. This was a win for 40-plus million people."

The atmosphere inside TD Garden was electric, with loud boos during national anthems and raucous chants from both sets of fans.

The tournament served as a preview for the NHL’s return to the Olympics in 2026, and McDavid hopes it brought new fans to the sport.

"You can't ask for a better show than that," he said.
