A two-member bench of the court comprising Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani and Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had earlier reserved the judgment of the case on August 15.
In the court’s proceedings today, the expansion of the project was given a go-ahead on the condition that four saplings will be planted for every tree cut during the construction work.
Earlier conservationists and government officials did not seem to be satisfied with the project due to the reason that it required the felling of dozens of trees.
In this regard, SC had set up a mediation committee which was headed by Lawyer Parvez Hassan.
The Lahore Bachao Tehreek (LBT) had challenged the Punjab government’s decision of the expansion of Canal Road.

I would only say , trees saves lives ,,,they are for humans...humans are not for trees....millions of hours have been wasted on that canal road if aggregated for all people who have stuck on that road till today,,,common ,let them expand the road....max you can advice them to plant x number of plants, examine them after one year and go ahead,,,,is it so hard? is it some extremely complex mathematical equation which these plant lovers and judges cannot solve,,,and if it is so hard for them,,,they dont deserve to be where they are.... let us live
I really hope ET you will not get anything in this comment,,,coz you are stoping all of mine
We need to plant for centuries rather than the short quick fixes we have become used to...
Thanks LBT for fighting us that case of millions of people . m supporting u always...
This dispute is there for the last ten years or more.. In the meantime how many new trees were planted by the so called tree lovers or Lahore bachao Tahreek. ( LBT ) They are good at making hue and cry without realising the hardships to the public. Now thanks to SC . It is over. Now govt should go ahead with full force.
I fully endorse this decision. With a request that the saplings to be planted be of best possible Size/Age, and all should be of the Native Species, like 'Neem', Pipal, and 'Talhee'.
